Self-assignments - Part 2

As I already mentioned in one of the previous homeworks, I'm here on a scholarship with several international students. Our recognition ceremony will be 2 weeks from now and I wanted to produce something nice for my friends.
Since I really like video editing, a music video was my first option. In order to promote the video, on the other hand, I decided to create some very simple posters, that would be posted on Facebook today if I haven't decided to use higher-resolution pictures for the others (which means that these are kinda useless right now)... Anyway, here they are:

Self-assignments - Part 1

The best part of my scholarship here in the U.S. is the fact that I get to know a lot of interesting (i.e. crazy) people. One of them is my good friend Rasyid Moefty, whose desire of becoming "accidentally famous" inspired me to produce a lot of accidents on purpose.
The posters are stupid, but I've learned a lot about Photoshop by investing some hours on them...

Project 4: Book Cover

My book cover for "Let Me In", a Sweedish vampire fiction by John Ajvide Lindqvist.

Project 3: Map

This is a "short version" of my city's map (Canela). It turned out to be completely different from what I originally planned, but I kinda liked the result...

Culture Fair's Poster

Although GDS 108 is my very first class of Graphic Design (and also the last, considering I will go back to my country in May), part of my work in the International Students Associations of Parkland was to create a poster for the event called "Culture Fair".
As you can see bellow, the result is really simple and probably reflects my lack of experience, but... what can I say? At least I tried...

Idea for Project 3

This is the map of a very common route for me in Brazil: from my parents house (a National Forest) to the bus station of my city (Canela). I always get lost, so it might be useful...

Project 2: Title Sequence Story Board

So, here's my idea for the title sequence of "The Forgotten". I tried to match the color scheme and font style of the poster (something that the original sequence completely ignored)...

Depth

Some examples of this very interesting concept:

Project 1: The Grid

Nothing outstanding here, just a first idea executed in a very simple way.
Hopefully, I'll get better until the end of the semester...

Balance

Concerning the importance of an element within a composition or how well evened are the negative and positive shapes of the whole, visual balance was the main topic of discussion last week and, therefore, here are some interesting examples I found at my favorite stock images website (Stock.XCHNG). The pictures illustrate symmetrical balance and radial symmetry.

Emphasis

As we previously discussed (and now I'm actually quoting myself, from last week's assignment on Angel), Graphic Design is essentially a way to communicate ideas. Like in any message, some parts are more important than the others. Emphasis, therefore, helps us to highlight these particular pieces, making sure that the audience will recognize them as key points to understand the whole. Bellow, some examples of this concept. All of them are stock images I found at Stock.XCHNG...

Unity

On the last GDS 108 class we discussed a very important concept in Graphic Design: unity.
Since images play a very important role in our field of study, it seemed like a good idea to research for some pictures that could help to illustrate the subject...

Introduction

In my modest opinion, starts are the hardest and most critical part in any project. When it comes to a blog, it could not be any different.
Unfortunately, I’m not one of those persons that like to talk about themselves (at all), which makes it even harder for me to write this few lines. However, I don’t see any plausible alternative, so… here we go:
My name is Fábio Goulart Andrade, I am 19 years old and I come from a small city located at the extreme south of Brazil (what explains my bad English. Sorry about that).
Back in my country, I studied to become an Elementary School teacher, but my passion for technology was bigger, so I decided to start college in Analysis and Development of Systems.
Five months ago I was selected to a scholarship in the United States. Since then (and until May of the next year), I’m living with other 12 international students in a very old and strange place (Atrium Apartments), learning about several cultures (including yours) and, more than anything, finding out a completely different side of my life.
I don’t know many things about Graphic Design, except for the fact that I’m really curious about it.
I am a little bit perfectionist (and by that I mean a lot) in everything I do, but I like to consider myself open minded as well, so critics are always welcome in order to achieve good results.
From this course I expect to absorb fundamental principles of general design and also explore my creativity and capacity of visual expression.
Well… I guess this is pretty much everything there is to know about me. Hopefully, I’ll be more consistent on my next posts…
