Concerning the importance of an element within a composition or how well evened are the negative and positive shapes of the whole, visual balance was the main topic of discussion last week and, therefore, here are some interesting examples I found at my favorite stock images website (Stock.XCHNG). The pictures illustrate symmetrical balance and radial symmetry.

 

Emphasis

As we previously discussed (and now I'm actually quoting myself, from last week's assignment on Angel), Graphic Design is essentially a way to communicate ideas. Like in any message, some parts are more important than the others. Emphasis, therefore, helps us to highlight these particular pieces, making sure that the audience will recognize them as key points to understand the whole. Bellow, some examples of this concept.
